Holy Basil tulsi tea in a glass cup

By Nikki

Holy basil, also known as tulsi, is a sacred plant in Hinduism and is highly revered for its medicinal properties. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional system of medicine that originated in India. Holy basil is believed to have numerous health benefits such as:

  1. Reduces stress and anxiety Holy basil has adaptogenic properties, which means it can help the body cope with stress. It has been shown to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can help to reduce anxiety and improve mood. Holy basil may also help to improve cognitive function and memory, which can be impaired by stress and anxiety.
  2. Improves respiratory function Holy basil has been used for centuries to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and coughs. It has been shown to have broncho dilatory and expectorant properties, which can help to open up the airways and clear mucus from the lungs. Holy basil may also have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to reduce inflammation in the airways and improve breathing.
  3. Supports cardiovascular health Holy basil has been shown to have cardio-protective properties, which means it may help to protect the heart and blood vessels from damage. It may help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, which are two major risk factors for heart disease. Holy basil may also help to improve blood flow and reduce the risk of blood clots, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
  4. Boosts the immune system Holy basil is rich in antioxidants, which can help to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. It may also help to boost the immune system by stimulating the production of white blood cells, which are the cells responsible for fighting off infections and diseases. Holy basil may also have antimicrobial properties, which can help to kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
  5. Improves digestion Holy basil has been used for centuries to treat digestive problems such as bloating, gas, and indigestion. It may help to stimulate the production of digestive enzymes, which can help to break down food and improve nutrient absorption. Holy basil may also help to reduce inflammation in the gut, which can improve digestive function and reduce symptoms of digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  6. Enhances skin health Holy basil contains compounds that may help to improve skin health. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help to reduce inflammation and protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Holy basil may also help to reduce the production of sebum, which can clog pores and lead to acne.
  7. May have anticancer properties Holy basil contains compounds that may have anticancer properties. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis, which is a process of programmed cell death that occurs in healthy cells. Holy basil may also help to reduce the toxicity of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which are commonly used treatments for cancer.

Holy basil is a highly revered plant in Ayurvedic medicine that has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of health conditions. It has adaptogenic properties that can help the body cope with stress, improve respiratory function, support cardiovascular health, boost the immune system, improve digestion, enhance skin health, and may have anticancer properties. Tulsi tea is widely available, you can also get Holy Basil in supplement form but I prefer the tea. You can drink it hot or cold anytime of the day or night.  I personally drink Tulsi Tea to help reduce stress levels (cortisol) especially if it has been a very hectic day.

As with any supplement or herbal remedy if you are uncertain if it safe for you, it is important to talk to your doctor before using holy basil, especially if you are taking medication or have a medical condition.
